Essay Writing
(Intermediate Writing)

Course Descripiton
Students enrolling in Intermediate Writing should already be able to compose organized, developed paragraphs as well as short essays (at least five paragraphs long).

This course will approach writing as a research tool and a persuasive device. Throughout the course, students will research a single topic of their choosing by writing the following papers :

Assignment 1, the Personal Knowledge Paper deals with the writer’s current feelings, knowledge, and experience with the topic;

Assignment 2, the Survey Report requires the writer to conduct a survey on his/her topic to gauge public opinion on the topic;

Assignment 3, the Interview Report, allows the writer to conduct an interview with an expert on his/her topic;

finally in Assignment 4, the Position Paper, the writer to express his/her opinions on the topic in a persuasive manner to the audience.

This course will focus on word efficiency and word choice, ensuring that ideas are expressed efficiently and without wordiness. Clarity in writing will be another key concern in the course since the first concern of any composition should be to engage the attention and understanding of the reader. We will also focus on a variety of grammatical and stylistic issues, including appropriate pronoun usage, sentence combining and clarity, correct punctuation, just to name a few. There is no textbook for this class, as materials will be presented in class and made available online.

Academic Writing
(Advacned Writing)

Course Description
This course will prepare students for composition in a variety of academic situations and contexts. Students will engage in analysis of research, argumentation (defending one’s own position on a topic), positing one’s opinion among current opinions, formulating counterarguments, and also taking essay exams, an academic context which most students find intimidating.

This course will prepare students to adhere to common conventions in their majors and in the English language itself. Through the activities and assignments provided by this course, students will be better equipped to navigate the various academic writing contexts in which they find themselves on a daily basis.

Presentation
(Advanced Level)

Course Description
This course will focus on developing fundamental skills and techniques for professional English presentations as well as creating effective Powerpoint slide structure. The students will practice presenting in class utilizing various skills obtained from class lectures and exercises.

The student will be given a Presentation Homework assignment each week which they will be able to practice presenting in front of the class, based on a different presentation skill format. This course focuses on a few commonly used formats such as:

1) An Interview presentation
2) Article Presentation
3) Graph and Chart Presentation
4) Argumentative and Position Presentation
5) Panel Discussion

Additionally the instructor will videotape each of the student’s presentations for instant feedback and self analysis. The student’s can download their presentations onto a USB flash memory stick for subsequent viewing. This helps the student see what they did right or wrong enabling for quicker improvement in their skills.

Students should have an Intermediate level 4 in English based on current KAIST Language Center rating scales or higher to fully benefit from this class. Basically, clear command of English and the ability to express ideas is beneficial.

Reading & Discussion
(Advanced Level)

Course Description
This course is designed for advanced English speakers (and occasional high intermediate students who are highly motivated to learn) and is designed to improve fluency in speaking as well as command of high-level expressions and idioms. There is no textbook for this class, as the course materials will be breaking news stories from popular English newspapers and news websites. We will also watch short, related news video segments when they are available, in order to work on listening comprehension and to add a multimedia element to the course. Students in Reading and Discussion will also have the opportunity to lead the discussion once during the class, choosing the topic and introducing the issue to our group.

In class, the first fifteen minutes or so will be dedicated to answering comprehension questions and focusing on difficult vocabulary and expressions in the article. After that, we’ll have time for small group discussions, which serve as an effective warm up for the large group discussions that follow.

In addition to discussing controversial topics, I will also deliver a seminar on persuasive speaking so that students will become more effective speakers both inside and outside of class.

Expression & Pronunciation

Course Description
Above all, this course will attempt to improve students’ English pronunciation ability, increase their confidence, and improve their understanding and listening skills.
Throughout the course, a variety of methods will be used in an endeavor to develop the students’ English pronunciation abilities.

Although this course remains primarily a pronunciation course, there will also be a focus on listening and conversation at times, as well as cultural issues of interest (for example differences between American and British English).
